Newsletter 1990 - Suvati Lion Prides

"I spent a lot of time one way or the other at Savuti last year and got to know various prides of lion. Shaba's pride and Naomi's pride provided spectacular game viewing for the most of my clients throughout the year. Shaba's pride (usually between 16 and 18 lion) brought down a fully grown giraffe one evening. They fed off that until their bellies were bloated.! They were then joined by Naomi's pride, making a total of 26 lion. Needless to say, the giraffe did not last long after that. The spotted hyenas kept us amused most of the year with little ones playing around their den, coming up to the vehicle and sniffing at the rather nervous passengers. Two or three different mothers, as the pup sizes were between little black fur balls to the lighter coloured (spotted) one year olds. the gentle old elephant buts of Savuti provided the back drop to all the game viewing. Never aggressive in any which way - they would always let us photograph them at very short distances. They are by far, my most favourite animal."

Love to you all
Daphne
